Gold Discovery Cairn
Cairn marking the spot where payable gold was first "officialy" discovered in Victoria in 1851 (cairn erected in 1935). The Victorian township of Clunes also claims that gold was first discovered in their area! History tells us that Warrandyte may have beaten them by a week or so. Either way, there is no doubt that the Aboriginal people would have discovered gold long before "white men" but probably had no use for the strange metal. Cairn is located on Anderson's Creek, Gold Memorial drive, Warrandyte.

Panning For Gold
Gold panning is permitted in Anderson's Creek (miner's right required). You may even find a few a specks, if you're lucky.

Shallow Workings
Example of shallow workings on Fourth Hill, Warrandyte (above Anderson's Creek). These shafts are everywhere! Although they may look shallow, the debris may be hanging (false bottom). So take care where you walk and NEVER CLIMB DOWN INTO SHAFTS!

Upper Monument Mine Shaft
The two monument shafts were sunk between 1953 and 1965. They were the last mines to operate on Fourth Hill. Apparently the miners found no gold.

Upper Monument Mine Shaft - Inside Shaft
Looking down into the upper monument mine shaft.

Monument Mine Lower Shaft
Lower monument mine shaft. The shaft was probably a lot deeper than it now looks. The debris you can see at the bottom of the shaft may be hanging (false bottom). Don't go climbing down there!

Monument Mine Hut
Monument mine hut (on hill just below shafts). The sheet iron hut is slowly being claimed by the bush. I was glad to be able to photograph it before it disappears forever. It must have been tough for the miners living and working under these conditions.

Monument Mine Hut - Another View
Another view of the monument gold miner's hut. The tree on the right is the only thing holding it up!
